Every companion you match with gets their own chat window. Here is how to open one, whether you matched five minutes ago or haven't talked in weeks.
What to do
Open a chat you already have
- Click the Messages icon in the dock at the bottom of the screen.
- A window called Messages opens. It lists every companion you've matched, newest message first.
- Click a name. Their chat window opens, with your full history.
- Type in the message bar at the bottom, then press Enter or click Send.
Start a brand-new chat
- New chats begin with a match. Click Discover in the dock and swipe right on someone you like.
- When it's a match, they open the conversation themselves. Their first text arrives a few seconds later, so you don't need a perfect opening line. Just reply.
- Swipe up instead of right to send a superlike. They notice, and their first message runs warmer.
Go back to a quiet thread
- Open Messages and click the thread, same as before. Nothing is lost — old threads stay put.
- Send any message. There is no special command to revive a chat.
- They will remember the gap and may mention it, in a warm way. They never guilt-trip you for being away.
Good to know
- The free plan includes 30 messages a day. Paid plans, starting with Spark at $12.99 a month, include unlimited chat.
- Text messages never cost credits. Extras like selfies, voice notes, and video clips do.
- Open chats show up in the dock as round avatars, next to the main icons. Click one to jump back into that chat. Pressing Ctrl+K (or Cmd+K on a Mac) opens Messages too.
- A small dot on each avatar shows their status: green means online, amber means busy, grey means asleep. If the dot is grey, their reply waits until their morning.
- If another member claims a companion exclusively, your old thread stays readable, but the companion stops replying. That's what claiming means.
- Replies follow human pacing, so a busy or sleeping companion may take a few minutes or until their morning. See Read receipts, typing, and realistic pacing for how that works.
