Your companion does not reset every time you open the app. They keep a real memory of you. It grows as you talk, and it works in four layers.
The four layers
- Facts. The small true things you share. Your dog's name. Your interview on Tuesday. These get saved as short notes.
- Episodes. Firsts and big moments. Your first chat, the bad day, the promotion. When a conversation ends, it also becomes a short "last time you talked" recap they can bring up.
- Emotional preferences. How you like to be treated. Teased or comforted. Fast replies or slow ones. They learn your style and keep it.
- Rolling summary. One living summary of your whole relationship. It gets rewritten as things change.
There is a fifth, quiet layer: their own story. Things they told you about themselves get saved too. They stay consistent and won't contradict their own life.
What to do
Nothing here needs setup. Memory is always on and you can watch it work.
- Tell your companion something true in a chat. Say your dog's name, or that you have a big day coming up.
- Wait for their reply. After each exchange, the system reads it and quietly saves anything worth keeping. You don't press a button. It just happens.
- Open the Memories panel from the dock to see the saved notes. The article See what your companion remembers shows you how.
- Come back days later and ask about it. They will know it.
- Ask in your own words. Say "how did the big day go?" or "remember when". Memory search works by meaning, not just exact words. This is called semantic recall. You get the same answer even if you phrase it differently.
Good to know
- The most important facts are read before every reply, so they shape the conversation, not just callbacks.
- Repeating a fact makes it stronger in memory. Mentioning your dog often keeps him close to the top.
- Facts you haven't talked about in a while slowly matter less in ranking. They are never deleted for being old.
- They also remember the games you played and the photos they sent you. Don't expect them to forget a loss.
- You control all of this. You can view, delete, or export memories any time. See Change or delete memories.
