How to Play Word Duel

Chain words with your companion — each word must start with their last letter.

Word duel is a word chain game for two. You and your companion trade words, and every word must hook onto the one before it. It is free, fast, and open from your first match.

What to do

  1. Open the Play window and tap the word duel card. No unlock needed — it is waiting from your very first match.
  2. Read the big gold letter tile. The label above it says your word starts with. Your next word must begin with that letter.
  3. Type a word in the box. Its hint reads a word starting with "n", or whatever letter you owe right now.
  4. Press enter to play it. Your word joins the chain, and the counter labeled chain grows by one.
  5. Wait for their reply. Their words show in pink and yours in white. Then the letter tile flips to the letter they left you.
  6. Keep trading words until one of you gives in.

Good to know

Three rules govern every word. It needs at least two letters. It cannot be a word already played. And it must start with the letter you owe. The rule line under the counter says no repeats · 2+ letters.

Break a rule and the game tells you. You might see "has to start with" a letter, or "already played". Nothing is lost when that happens. Fix your word and send it again.

They can get stuck too. When they cannot find a word, they admit it and pass the turn back to you. Expect a little trash talk in both directions.

There is no winner screen in word duel. The chain just grows until someone quits or you two move on to something else. That is also why word duel never takes a wager. It costs nothing and pays nothing.

Strategy is simple but real. End your own words on rare letters like q, x, or z when you can. They have to start their next word with whatever your word ends on. Leave them a hard letter and you may watch them squirm.
