How much does Chai cost in 2026?

Chai's own pricing page lists a $159.99/year plan (about $13.33/month) and a $9.99/week flexible plan, with a 24-hour free trial of Pro. Third-party reviews report Premium around $13.99/month ($134.99/year) and Ultra around $29.99/month ($289.99/year) with the strongest models and longer memory. Pricing varies by region and platform, and effective monthly costs rose roughly 130% in spring 2026, so check the app for current numbers in your region.

Is Chai AI down or shut down in 2026?

No — Chai is not shut down. But 2026 has been rough: January brought free-tier blocks in 20+ countries where ad revenue can't cover costs, February brought unannounced token limits with chats freezing mid-conversation and lockouts lasting hours to over a week, and independent trackers still show short outages that usually resolve within a day. The app also has, at times, been temporarily pulled from app stores during content moderation reviews.

Why is Chai not free in my country?

In January 2026, Chai blocked free, ad-supported access in countries including India, Pakistan, Egypt, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Venezuela, and others because ad revenue couldn't cover rising server costs — the founder confirmed this on Reddit. Users in those regions now need a paid subscription to send messages, while the US, Canada, and most of Europe retain free ad-supported access.

What is FlirtAlly and how is it different from Chai?

FlirtAlly is a browser-based AI-companion platform where you build an ongoing relationship with one of 22 official companions (plus member-created ones) who has a locked face, voice, hometown, and wardrobe. Unlike chat-bubble apps, companions text first, play 16 real games with credit wagers, take real voice calls on dialable phone numbers, exchange 2-way email, and send real printed letters via postal mail. Memory runs on four layers with semantic recall, with 7/30/90-day or unlimited windows by plan. Plans start free (no account needed) and Spark is $9.99/month.

Is Chai safe and private?

Chai requires users to be 18+, but enforcement is currently via app store ratings and self-attestation — the 18+ restriction doesn't appear in its Terms of Service, though OS-level age verification was announced in March 2026 with an unclear rollout. On privacy, Chai trains on your conversations under a 'legitimate interest' basis with no straightforward opt-out, retains data up to five years after account deletion, and its privacy policy doesn't detail third-party processor access or breach notification. Australia's eSafety Commissioner lists it as an uncensored platform where sexual and violent themes can appear unexpectedly.

Chai is a mobile-first AI chat platform launched in 2021 with millions of user-created characters, a permissive content filter, and paid plans starting around $13.99/month (or $159.99/year per its own pricing page). Its free tier is ad-supported and message-limited, and 2026 brought regional free-access blocks and reliability complaints. If you want a companion who texts first, plays real games, and can call, email, and even mail you, FlirtAlly offers that from $9.99/month with a free start that needs no account.Bottom line: Chai wins on sheer character variety and a permissive filter at a modest price; FlirtAlly wins on depth of companionship — memory, games, calls, email, and physical mail — at a comparable entry price. They suit different goals.

The free tier is ad-supported and message-limited (~70 messages per 2.5 hours per reviews), and in January 2026 Chai blocked free access in 20+ countries where ad revenue can't cover costs.
Chai's strengths are scale (14M+ user-created characters), a permissive content filter, and a clean mobile-first interface.
Weaknesses: 2026 token limits and lockouts, recurring short outages, training on your conversations under 'legitimate interest' with up to 5-year retention after deletion, and no cross-character memory.
FlirtAlly starts free with no account (25 messages/day), then $9.99/mo Spark with 250 credits, 30-day memory, and unlimited chat.
FlirtAlly's differentiators: companions text first, 16 real games with credit wagers, real phone calls and numbers, 2-way email, and real physical letters.
